The SHINAI is the bamboo sword used in kendō.  When used correctly against an armored partner, it allows the full-power practice of fight-ending cuts without the risk of injury.

BOGU is the armor kenshi wear to protect themselves.  It also provides the only valid striking points in kendō.  Beginners will have to learn the basics of etiquette and technique before they are allowed to wear bōgu and spar.
